Community Concerns CommissionChair: Kay O'Keefe Human Rights/Dignity: Jo Petron Military Resource Person One cannot listen to the news, read a newspaper or walk down the street without seeing/hearing the need for us to be involved in improving the human condition. Dorothy Day once said, "People say, what is the sense of your small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time." Mother Teresa expressed those sentiments many times. Spring is the time of year when the Buddy Poppy is highly-promoted. They were originally assembled in France. In 1923 the idea resulted in the VFW Buddy Poppy fashioned by the disabled and needy veterans who were paid for their work. It is as traditional as the Memorial Day flower. The Veterans pay for the assembling. The VFW and Auxiliary do not get paid for selling poppies. The money is used for needy and disabled veterans and their widows and orphaned children. So stop and get your Buddy Poppy on the annual Poppy Day – this year it is May 14 – in remembrance for those who have defended our country. Any donation is acceptable. Wear a VFW Buddy Poppy and be proud. Call a legislator, encourage a friend to do the same, and pray! Physically & Mentally Challenged: Rose Anne Hallgren
